The Ebb and Flow

I’ve been freelance for over 15 years now. There have been many ups and downs during that time both professionally and personally, and (I think) I like it! It’s certainly not boring or repetitive.
But I’ve never really gotten used to the ebb and flow of it. I’m always anxious when there’s no work and happy (or maybe overwhelmed?) when there is work. But after 15+ years you’d think I’d have figured out the rhythm… First quarter busy, second quarter slow, third quarter picks up, fourth quarter slammed. And yet I always feel like I need to be hyper-vigilant… always ready to drop everything to take a job that comes in.
Maybe that’s just the nature of freelance.
If you’re reading this you probably know me… In fact I probably sent it to you directly (Hi by the way!). So what do you do? How do you manage the ebb and flow? Do you go with the flow, or fight against the ebb?
Times are weird now; budgets tight. So I’ll always take a job that comes my way. But when there isn’t one, should I be stressed? Probably not. It’s good to stay top of mind as a freelancer; it’s good to remind your lovely clients that you exist… but sometimes maybe it’s okay to just disconnect (as one of said lovely clients just reminded me).
Anyway, I’m available for work if you need me. ;)
